Irony!!!Irony Defined IRONY is a form of speech or writing when an outcome or answer is sarcastically opposite or unexpected.IRONY has been with me through out my life on many occasions such as last year my friend and I cut a lot of classes together there are days he and I didn't go to school for weeks and yet he still got a perfect attendance award and I didn't. There is always irony on T.V like when someone is murdered in a "LIVING ROOM". Such a morbid thing in a place called a "LIVING" room. The Poem Richard Cory By Edwin Arlington Robinson Richard Cory is a man admired by many. He was rich walked with a glitter. He fluttered when he said good morning. People watched him as he walks The last line in the poem (And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet through his head) is a surprise because the poet described him as this happy elegant noble man with money and good looks its sort of ironic he ended his life. . The people admired Richard Cory because he was a gentlemen and rich. This poem is different then a item in the news paper because on the news paper rich people are ridiculed and they don't show people who a generally noble. The tone of the poem is cheery in the way I read it untill the end where it suddenly because grim and morbid. Irony is present in this poem because the poet described Richard Cory as this happy rich elegant noble man but Richard Cory probably didn't find him self to be that great and killed him self yu would think someone with his wealth would be happy that is a very ironic twist. The story is told in 3rd person by the people on the street. The most dangerous game goes here. The irony in this article from the New York Times "The House that Slaves Built" is that the White House was built by a crew of laborers, both free and African American slaves. In the 20th Century it was thought to be taboo to bring an African American inside or around the White house. For things like private dinners or tea parties. I believe that this ties into the racism that still went on during that time. The irony in this article is that Today we have a African American family which is Barack Obama's family living in the White House. It's such an irony since a few decades ago it was unheard of a Afro American being seen near the White house. In this article "Is it ironic that many people don't understand irony?" The different types of irony are mentioned, as well the way people use it without knowing if they use it or the correct way of using it. I believe that not many people know exactly how to explain irony. In this article a lady who is a college graduate didn't know the exact definition of irony and used it the wrong way.
